The Indigo Hotel is situated on Wireless road that is full of interesting history. The road was built during the reign of King Rama the 6th which cut through Thailand's first wireless telegraph station, which later on the road was named after.
With its shady footpath, the wireless road lies numbers of office buildings and embassies which have green open spaces connected with the public landscape as well.
The design concept of the hotel was to create a connection with the road as much as possible. Also to brought out its charm and create an identity for hotel lobby and guest rooms. Landscape played an important part in order to draw people eyes and invite them in.
The landscape concept is 'Nostalgia' which meant to tell the stories of this road and to represent interesting characters of wireless telegraph, also to combine the classic and stylish aspect of that era.
Landscape space was very limited due to the size of the land and the already compact 1,700 square meter of overall space, therefore the landscape must be wisely designed and brought out the attractiveness in each of its elements such as road, boundary wall etc.
Due to the limitation of space, the
landscape design priority was to function well. Hotel entrance roadway provided
a lobby drop off, temporary parking lane and the main circulation lane to avoid
traffic that may disturb the public road and public footpath as well. Also, as
the hotel entrance is close by the skytrain station, the landscape area at the
front allow the pedestrian to enter the hotel easily, without interfering
roadway.
Stand at the front, the big and beautiful Ficus Benjamina L. that was attached to the deteriorate existing concrete wall. We saw the value of it and tend to keep both to conform to the Nostalgia concept. However, in order to maintain them, the wall was carefully treated and adjusted which has become the important gimmick for the hotel landscape.
As
Nostalgia concept is to bring back histories and charms of the age of wireless
telegraph, Morse code, lines of radio waves and equalizer physical characters
were also used to create interesting landscape features. With the same
direction of architecture and interior architecture concept surely make the
Indigo hotel unique, bold and undeniably intriguing.
