Located right in one of Bangkok’s bustling districts, ‘Baan Sukhumvit 16’ offers a sense of Green Sanctuary that makes you forget about the busy surroundings. The compound consists of 4 separate houses of extended families and shared clubhouse facility. Using softscape as each properties boundaries creating continuity of green, makes the property seemed connected yet still remain privacy. Overall landscape concept is the ‘Sanctuary of tropical forest’ that accentuates the variety of plantation combined with the simplicity of hardscape.

The landscape of ‘Baan Sukhumvit 16’ was developed in parallel with the architecture, having considered the functionality of space, visual sequence and most importantly the integration of landscape. The relationship of indoor space and outdoor space that connected in term of function where one space can be combined with other creates flexibility of space. It is clear that courtyard scheme establishes an optimum relationship in terms of both privacy and integration of landscape. There are four intriguing enclosed spaces in the residence.

The landscape design concept was inspired by “Oku”, a Japanese philosophy of an internal and mental spatial experience expressed in a 3-Dimension space. The sense of “Oku” is realized by means of creating vacancy and multi-layers and also flexuous approach to “Oku” and spatial contradistinctions and efficient ways to enrich the sense of “Depth”.

Defined by indoor and outdoor partitions, the extended outdoor rooms allow the enclosed space to be widely perceived and connected. The connecting rooms can become one big functional space during special events. Combined with the concept of “Oku”, the extended outdoor rooms intrigue the perception of further depth dimension as if no boundary exists. Visual sequence is gradually changes as walking through the grand foyer where the center terrace appear and connect between the parallel indoor rooms. The extended room continues to fishpond and wall feature area as seem being protrude from the living room where a solid wall feature plays a role as backdrop that display the movement of shades throughout the day.
